Winemaker Giuseppe Losapio founded Azienda Uggiano in the early 1970s, and steadily developed the estate at San Vincenzo a Torri. It is now one of the leading producers in the Chianti Colli Fiorentini zone. With 100 hectares of hillside vineyards (in both Colli Fiorentini and around neighbouring Chianti Classico, near San Casciano), Uggiano produces classic and classy Tuscan reds from the region’s principal grape varieties. A core of quality runs through an unfussy, practical and exceptionally well-priced range, from bright entry level Chianti to some impressive Riserva wines. In 2015, the Losapio family sold the company to Uggiano’s young but experienced management team, including commercial manager Giacomo Fossati and Daniele Prosperi, winemaker for the past 12 vintages.
Vineyards
The predominantly Sangiovese grapes, (90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo), from Montespertoli in the Colli Fiorentini zone, are harvested in late September.
Vinification
Grapes are hand-picked, crushed and undergo 10-15 days’ fermentation with selected yeasts in stainless steel at 28-30°C. The must is pumped over the skins twice a day. Meanwhile, 10 to 15% of the crop is left to dry for 30 days, then added to the freshly fermented wine. This brings about a slow refermentation lasting 4 to 5 weeks. The process, known as Governo, enhances freshness, concentration and roundness in the finished wine.
Tasting Notes
A ripe and supple red made by the traditional Tuscan ‘Governo’ method, involving a slow refermentation of the freshly produced wine with the addition of semi-dried grapes to give concentration.
Youthful aromas of ripe plum and cherry with spicy bramble fruit. Full flavoured and generous on the palate with good concentration of red berry fruit backed by fresh acidity and supple tannins. An approachable, rounded style with a mellow, gently spicy finish.
Drink with roast meats, pies & hearty vegetable casseroles.
