Founder Annabel Thomas started Nc’nean to change the way the world sees whisky from Scotland, focusing on creating sustainably-produced single malts that exist in harmony with the world. To minimise its impact in terms of carbon footprint, pollution and biodiversity, the distillery is powered by renewable energy, using 100% organically-farmed barley and recycling 99.97% of its waste. Even the bottles are 100% recycled glass. Named after Neachneohain, the queen of spirits in Gaelic legend, Annabel and the team walk their own path, drawing inspiration from the world around them to create bold, creative and flavourful spirits.
Cask Breakdown: 55% STR Red Wine, 43% Ex-American Whiskey, 2% Oloroso Sherry
100% Organic, 100% Scottish
Barley is the heart of any whisky and one of the most important ingredients. Nc’nean uses 100% organically-farmed barley from 10 farms across Scotland. These farms do not use any artificial pesticides or fertilisers, resulting in huge biodiversity and better soil and water quality. Nc’nean is located on Scotland’s rugged west coast, where it’s harder to grow crops, so has chosen farms along the east coast, from as far north as Elgin in Speyside to Grantshouse in the south near the English border.
Tasting Notes
An organic single malt whisky from Nc’nean, made with Scottish barley and matured in a combination of specially-selected red wine and American whiskey casks. The palate offers notes of lemon curd, poached peaches, juicy apricots and spicy white pepper.
