What’s in a name? Meaning “a point and a half” in Piedmontese (the language of the Piedmont area in northwest Italy in which Turin is located) the official line is that “Punt e Mes” is one “point” sweet to a “half-point” bitter, which puts it somewhere between sweet red vermouth and Campari.
It seems that the difference between Carpano ‘Punt e Mes’ as Vermut Amaro and Red Vermouth is really down to what Carpano decided to write on the label, which changes from bottle to bottle. This is why you’ll see Carpano categorised as a Red Amaro as well as Red Vermouth.
