When Abraham Izak Perold crossed Pinot Noir and Cinsault in 1924, little did he realise that the result would be a grape variety hated throughout the world. Unlike Marmite which is roughly 50:50 for those who love or hate it, it isn’t unreasonable to think that it is more 90:10 for those who hate Pinotage.
Fortunately for Abraham, he died in 1941 as the first wine was being made with this grape, so he never incurred the wrath of Pinot Noir and Cinsault lovers. However, once in a while, someone manages to polish this turd into something drinkable. And very rarely, someone manages to produce something decent. This is one of those times.
