Established in 1945 Casa Mariol is one of the older private wine producers in the area. In the hands of the current generation the winery has undergone modernisation and gained a solid reputation for varietal driven wines and Vermut.
Terra Alta (translating as ‘high land’) is a remote appellation in the south of Catalunya.
The wine itself is made from a varietal locally called Samsó – the Catalan for more familiar Cariñena (aka Carignan).
The wine is light red berry in the glass. The nose is characterised by crunchy cherry and raspberry notes and a hint of dried Mediterranean herbs. The wine is aged for 16 months in American oak which brings some spice and vanilla to the nose and palette, but it is well integrated. Soft and supple on the palette, very enjoyable glass of wine.
Pair with grilled meat and vegetables, hard cheese.
