The 2015 Niepoort Poeirinho Garrafeira is a love letter to the Baga grape and the storied wines of Bairrada. Named after the old term for Baga, Poeirinho is Dirk Niepoort’s homage to the region’s heritage, capturing its wild spirit and showcasing the potential of its ancient vines. This Garrafeira edition is a rare gem, crafted from select old vineyards, some dating back over a century. Aged meticulously in the cool cellars of Quinta de Baixo, this wine has developed remarkable complexity while retaining a vibrant freshness that makes it a true standout in any collection.
The 2015 growing season in Bairrada featured a mix of cool, wet winters and warm, sunny summers. Early August ripeness checks revealed the grapes were maturing quickly, prompting a harvest start on 25 August. The old-vine Baga was vinified using a combination of traditional open lagares and stainless steel tanks, allowing for a perfect extraction of colour and flavour. After malolactic fermentation in 2500L wooden vats, the wine aged unhurriedly for 48 months, gaining depth and finesse before being bottled unfiltered in July 2019.
